secret daughter

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

I just finished reading Secret Daughter by June Cross. June was born to a white mother, and a black father. Her mother raised her until it became obvious that June couldn’t “pass” as white, and they handed her off to a black family to raise. Later in life, when around friends of her mothers, June would have to call her mother “Norma” or “Aunt Norma” in order to keep the facade up, and that was as late as the 70′s. June Cross went on to work in television news, and it was during her time at Frontline that she invited her viewers to learn her story. The story was amazing, alebit a little shocking that a mother would give up her child to protect her own career, or her husbands career (that was one of the excuses used in the book, as June’s stepfather was an actor).

where was this stuff when i had toddlers?

The next time I need a gift for a baby shower, I’m giving the parents-to-be some cool baby clothes, none of that cutesy pink or blue crap! I love the one that says “Stop Smelling My Head“, because I am soooo guilty of that. It’s some sort of compulsive thing, I swear. Your toddler won’t get his Pampers kicked in playground when he’s dressed to kill in these clothes!

Earlier this week I told all my online girls that my goal was to be the first PayPerPost’er to make it to $1000, and I’m almost there!  Kim just told me that I am $18.49 away from breaking $1000 with PayPerPost.  For those of you who haven’t been paying attention,(shame on you!) my first post for was on July 5th, so not quite 2 months ago.  I’ve averaged $500 per month since I started blogging with, and I’ve met some great people along the way (hi Techie, Willie, Brett, Brandy & Bug!) What will being the first person to break $1000 bring?  Fame?  Fortune?  A free dinner from PayPerPost founder Ted Murphy?  Only time will tell…

trying something new…

Have you seen this bottle?  Cause I can’t find it anywhere!

Yes, it’s the elusive Tresemme smoothing pomade.  Once available in Wal-Marts and Targets, I can’t find it anywhere locally now.  I did find it only, but I refuse to pay double what it should cost to have it shipped to me.  So by now you’re asking, what the heck is it for?  When I use a flat iron to do my hair, I dab a little of this pomade on my part to smooth down and wayward hairs that don’t want to lay down nicely.  It looks like dippity-doo (raise your hand if you remember that!) but it’s very light and not greasy at all.  Hence, the reason why I’m bent at it not being in stores anymore!

I did find an alternative.  While in Wal-Greens this weekend, buying a blender with my girlfriends (don’t ask!) I found this:

I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m hoping the Citre Shine “highly polished gloss” comes through for me.  I’m a bit nervous because the contents of the package look glittery from the outside of the jar.

one touch

You know I’m all about products advertised on TV. The One Touch Can Opener was ranked as one of the top ten best products on TV by customers. I’ve always used a traditional can opener, but after seeing this on TV, I may need to add it to my collection. My kids are old enough to make their own lunches now, and tuna and Chef BoyArdee are the favorites – but I really don’t want them cutting themselves on the can once it’s opened. Also, a traditional can opener is a little tricky for younger hands. The One Touch Can Opener appears much easier to use – not only for younger kids, but older folks as well. At $19.95, it costs about 4 times what I paid for my old school can opener, but it’s cheaper than one of those under the cabinet mounted deals, so it’s a decent value. Plus the kids won’t cut their fingers and get blood in the tuna, LOL! And you can replace the lid once you open it, which elimates the need to move the contents into another container.

The jury is in on the duvet. 2 snaps up! There’s nothing like a big, poufy, comfy comforter and duvet to make a girl sleep til’ noon!

I love Kohl’s. For those of you not in the know, it’s a department store with nice stuff, and good deals. My mom and I always hit one in New Jersey when we went up to see my grandpa. We had two open in Florida this year, about an hour or so away. We have 2 opening up closer this fall.

Last weekend I decided to see how far the one in Clermont was from our new home…and it was do-able! So my mom and I went over and stocked up. Last Friday we went back with my friend, leaving the boy children at home. I got So.Much.Stuff! A new skirt and shirt and sandals for my birthday (ASSuming my husband is taking me somewhere nice, ha!), sheets for the kids beds ($10 for 250 thread count twin sheets!), pillows for the couch ($6 each!), spare pillows (since we’ve got a “guest suite” now), and clothes for me…SO MANY CLOTHES. Everything on sale.

Small clothing related rant – why do pants in my size fit in the hips and butt, but not in the waist? Am I supposed to “cinch it” with a belt? Am I supposed to have more junk in my trunk? I had to go to the little girls department to find shorts that fit, and you try finding “mom” shorts in the girls department, with no glitter or unicorn appliques on them!

Still, I love Kohl’s, and I can’t wait til we have one much closer to us!

My legs are like buttah, thanks to Neutrogena’s new sugar scrub. I used to buy the one from Bath & Body Works, but that stuff is pricy! Neutrogena’s version cost me around $5, and it has a yummy citrus smell. It’s got the slightest little bit of oil in it, so it leaves a really nice sheen on your legs. I normally shave (with my Venus Divine razor of course) and then apply the scrub. When you get out of the shower, pat your legs dry LIGHTLY, lest you rub off all the lovely mosturizing qualities.

And then thank me for saving you money.

hear that?

That’s the sound of the squeaky wheel, getting all the grease.

My new fridge arrives TOMORROW!

bye bye dry!

This new Pantene stuff I got for my hair is so good, I may have to give it four snaps in Z formation! (The Zorro snap)

I’ve been using the intense mosturizing mask (basically a heavy duty conditioner for in shower use) and a spray in conditioner (for use after the shower, on still wet hair) that is supposed to “correct & revitalize”. It’s working! My hair is no longer dry enough to start a brush fire!

I also tried another leave in conditioner from Pantene that was a gel you put in when your hair is wet. It was sort of goopy and I thought it made my hair feel too weighted down. I am going to try it one more time, to make sure I didn’t use too much the first time, but I’ll probably stick with whats working.
