About a year ago at work, I had an issue with another employee. I was covering a shift at the receptionist desk and someone else was logged on to that computer. I was on my own laptop, using my wireless computer, but AT that desk. With me so far?
So person A starts IM’ing with person B, who is not at her desk, because she went to lunch – I’m there. Person A really opened her mouth and stuck her foot right in, via IM. She talked smack about the company, her boss, ME, my boss, the situation of covering the desk at lunch, and basically what she thought about everything. Oh my god, you’ve never seen me copy & paste so fast in my life. There’s no way I was going to let this person get away with it – not once she brought my name into it. I was able to print out what she said and present it to a higher-up, and the girl was reprimanded. (Why she wasn’t fired, I don’t know!)
For weeks after that, I was in fear that she would find out I was the whistle blower. I knew there was no way she could, but she was trying hard to find out who it was. I heard her constantly pestering the IT guys to give up their “trade secrets” so to speak. It took a long time for me to feel secure in the office again, and not like I was going to have to be involved in a confrontation.
If we had a keystroke logger from SpectorSoft, I could have avoided all of that. I wouldn’t have ever had to be involved, and indirectly put into a bad situation. It’s a very handy tool for employee issues & investigations like the one I was involved in.
