If you’ve been paying any attention here recently, you may remember that my sister’s mom died last month of pancreatic cancer. In fact, we’re doing another 5K walk in her honor this Saturday.

patrick swayzeCheryl’s mom was diagnosed in May, and she made it almost a year. That’s practically unheard of for pancreatic cancer patients, so when I heard today that Patrick Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given 5 weeks to live, I wasn’t surprised. It’s an incredible shame that pancreatic cancer has usually done too much damage by the time it can be diagnosed, and that’s why only 1% to 5% of all pancreatic cancer patients can call themselves survivors.

I’ve always been a fan of Patrick Swayze, from his role as Johnny in Dirty Dancing (”No one puts Baby in a corner!”), to the time he shook his booty as a Chippendale’s dancer with Chris Farley on Saturday Night Live. He was great in Ghost too. He’s a good guy too – married to his wife Lisa Niemi since 1975…nice to see when so many Hollywood couples treat marriages like a disposable item.

Patrick is 55 now, and was diagnosed in January. The cancer has spread, and it hasn’t responded to chemo. What a damned shame.

A damned shame indeed. This is distressing news, Colleen.

Luckily, the 5 weeks thing was jumping the gun on the reports earlier today.

“Actor Patrick Swayze has been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. Patrick’s physician Dr. George Fisher states, ‘Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far. All of the reports stating the timeframe of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic.’ Patrick is continuing his normal schedule during this time, which includes working on upcoming projects. The outpouring of support and concern he has already received from the public is deeply appreciated by Patrick and his family.”

Yep. What Jade quoted. Simply untrue about 5 weeks to live.
