I think I’ve mentioned before that I spent many a vacation in Pensacola, Florida as a child. My grandparents owned a winter home there, right on the inter coastal waterway. From their house, and the large patio in the back, they had a great view of the water, barges going up and down the waterway, and even a beach in the far off distance.
The only thing lacking were waves and surf. There’s not much in the way of waves on the gulf coast of Florida, so the scene was a tranquil one, with gentle little waves lapping at the sand where her huge back yard ended. Not bad for boating, swimming, shelling, or poking at crabs, but not as fun as a day spent on the Atlantic coast, crashing and splashing in huge waves, and watching the surfers. Luckily, I made several trips to that area at one time or another, and experienced the fun of big waves, and the feeling of sand rushing from beneath your toes as the waves roll back out to sea. Aside from a few trips to the Atlantic shore in New Jersey, my children have never seen that coast, and they definitely haven’t seen it from one of the beautiful beaches on Florida’s east coast. (The views of the sand and sea we’ve seen from cruise ships leaving Port Canaveral and Miami don’t count!)
I know they’d love a trip to that area, and so would I. I’m attracted to the history of St. Augustine and Fernandina Beach. I’d like to enjoy a trip to Bulow Plantation Ruins State Park, where part of the second Seminole War was fought. The kids would love the Alligator Farm Zoological Park in St. Augustine, or just a day with the big waves crashing around them at the beach. Click here for more information on Florida's northeast coast and find out what you’d like to do in Florida…golf? An air boat ride? A day at the beach?
It all sounds good to me!
