While I was on vacation in Montreal over the summer, I caught a bit of a show on HBO that captured me. I couldn’t figure out what the show was, so I used IMDB to find out what Bill Paxton was up to. Turns out I was watching Big Love. 
I had heard about the show, but since we don’t have HBO at home, I hadn’t ever watched an episode. (We have 437 other channels included in our expanded cable - why can’t we get HBO in there too? I’m not willing to pay another $10 a month for it!)
Anyway, I decided that the show intrigued me enough to order season 1 on Netflix. It arrived a few weeks ago, and I’ve been so busy watching all of the new fall shows that I sort of forgot about it. I was actually contemplating sending it back, unwatched! Then I found myself out of new TV to watch this weekend, and home alone. I popped the first Big Love disc into my DVD player, and I was hooked. I stayed up until 1am watching the entire disc!
I’ve always been fascinated by Mormons and polygamists. Mormons, just because it’s sort of a secretive religion with a lot of different beliefs than mainstream Christianity, and polygamy…well, c’mon, multiple wives? That’s fascinating! I’ve watched specials about the communes that exist in Utah, where girls as young as 14 or 15 are married off to old men, and the boys of the commune are deserted in the city to fend for themselves. I think part of the reason that I fell for Big Love so hard is that they’re not that kind of polygamist. It’s really a show about marriage, and not a show about a man with three wives. Aside from being in a marriage with 2 other wives, any one of the women is JUST like me. They get jealous, they care for their kids, they go to work, they have sex with their husband.
And holy cow, do they have SEX! I forgot that this show was an HBO series, so the first time I saw Bill Paxton’s naked ass on the screen, I was a little caught off guard. I quickly recovered though, and actually paused and slowly scrolled through the scene and realized that his uhh…dangly bits also made it into the scene. Ever so briefly, but they were there! Bill and his wives have a LOT of sex. They’re a buncha horn dogs! And you get to see his naked ass quite frequently.
I’m anxiously awaiting the arrival of the next disc, and trying not to peek at any of the information on the Big Love website. I don’t want any spoilers! I did see a neat quiz there, that will let you know which wife you’re most like. Are you the boss lady, Barb? Or intense, like Nicki? A little immature, like Margene? (I’m a Nicki!)
If you’re not watching this show, I command you to get the DVD - beg, borrow, or steal. You won’t regret it!

I watched the first season recently. Good stuff!
We’ve watched since the beginning. It’s an awesome show, alhtough I fell out of love with it a bit in the 2nd season. Once you’ve watched, let me know, and I’ll tell you my feelings; I don’t want to give anything away.

I don’t have HBO and I’m really not all that interested in a show about polygamy. Stunner there, I tell you!
I dont’ have HBO, but I love that you can see entire seasons on DVD and stuff now. I never watched Desp. Housewivse or Sex in the City, but I can now do marathons with DVDs if I choose to, and I love that. I don’t have the patience to wait week to week, i want to know what happens NOW!
