Let’s start with the first day of chaos, which was Friday - open house day. I attended the elementary school open house without issue. Met teaches, grabbed information packets, handed in supplies. Then we headed over to the middle school open house. The fact that I had to park a 1/2 mile away from the entrance should have been my first clue. It was PURE chaos inside. Unlike the 1st open house, there wasn’t anyone directing people or handing out maps, so new parents (like me!) were left to our own devices. We weren’t even on the right side of the school, and after stopping and asking 2 people for directions, we finally made our way upstairs to the right classroom. We met all the teachers, skipped buying P.E. uniforms (the line in the gym had 100 people in it, easily!), and got out quick.
It’s insane to plan a 2 hour open house for every parent in a K-8 school to attend. At the very least, there should be a special orientation for new students, and another for 6th graders. Changing classes and showering after P.E. is a big deal for these kids, and a lot of them are clueless on what to expect. A orientation for just those students would have alleviated a lot of stress for a lot of parents that day.

Their first year (2005-2006) they had maps of the school plastered everywhere. They know that there are new families every year AND they have changed the locations of some grades (4-6) every year, so they should have had maps out again.
Luckily we got a decent parking space in the back of the school, but it didn’t help lessen the madhouse inside.
