Our chocolate lab has issues.

Like most labs, she’s afraid of loud noises. She doesn’t do well with heavy rain, thunder, big trucks, the vacuum, or fireworks. Last year we went out to see fireworks, and when we came home, it looked like there was a knife fight in our house. The poor dog had rubbed her nose on the carpet til it bled, and it bled, and bled and bled. What a mess!

We didn’t want to repeat that scene this year (cause it’s SO much fun coming home and needing to immediately steam clean your brand new carpet to remove blood!) so we asked the vet about medication for her. We have the medication, but it’s something you need to give the dog every day, and she doesn’t really need to be on doggie Xanax daily.

While we were at a cookout yesterday, the hostess mentioned they gave their dog, upon their vet’s instruction, a Benadryl tablet. Their dog is a very spirited 9 month old Golden Retriever, and they didn’t want him to be spooked by the fireworks. It seemed to work, so we gave Bailey the same when we got home.

I’m happy to report that it worked GREAT! We were outside for about an hour setting off fireworks with the neighbors, and Bailey stayed on the couch curled up snoozing the whole time. She was a little clingy when I came in for the night, but she didn’t have any accidents or issues or injuries. Yay for allergy medicine!

my dog & rabbit used to hate fireworks too… but we just kept them in their crate (where they felt safe) and they were fine.

My current dog & rabbits are okay with the loud noises. DH says one big sparkly firework went off over our dog’s head (far away…but lit things up) and she didn’t do a thing. Oh well, yay us not to have nervous pets anymore.

That’s interesting to know. I was at the vet about two weeks ago and heard a lady talking to the receptionist, and the heartburn/acid indigestion RX they had…pepcid AC…she figured it out on vacation, because she called the vet, she forgot the RX, and the vet said to pick up pepcid AC..it was the same thing, but cheaper by RX…go figure. (it was for a bassett hound)
