You heard it here first kids - PayPerPost, the original blog marketing company, where all press is good press, has secured another $7 million in financing. Some say lightning doesn’t strike twice, but it obviously does for Ted Murphy. (And seeing as how I’m their top earner right now, at over $12,000 earned in less than a year, I hope lightning continues to strike!) Some of you might remember an announcement from the start up last fall that they had secured $3 million in funding through Draper Fisher Jurvetson. Now they’ve got another $7 million in their pockets, from existing investors like Inflexion Partners and Village Ventures. Along for the ride this time is a new player, DFJ Gotham.
PayPerPost recently announced a new marketing tool called PPP Direct, where advertisers can work with the blogger of their choosing for a small 10% markup, which puts PayPerPost on a playing field with sites like Sponsored Reviews and Review Me.
With over 6,500 advertisers, and 28,000 bloggers (known in the community as “posties”), and over 125,000 sponsored blog entries, one can only wonder what young Ted Murphy (how old is that guy, anyway?) will do with his new funds. In a press release, Ted said he planned to use the cash for infrastructure, visibility, and professional expertise. That’s all well and good, but I hope they always remain a small enough company that I feel comfortable enough to show up to their offices or email Ted personally. That’s part of what’s captured my heart with PayPerPost. I (typically) don’t feel like just another cog in a big corporate wheel. Ted attempts to make everyone feel like a part of the community, and it would be a shame to lose that.
One can only hope that with this additional funding, we’ll see a lot more advertiser growth as well, so that when I log in, the amount of opportunities to choose from is staggering. Right now, I think the growth has been more on the blogger side, and we need more advertisers to achieve a balance.
*Update - Michael Arrington beat me to the punch. I’m not sure if that’s being in good company or not. He only beat me because I stopped typing this post to feed my kids. Ah, the hardships of being a mommy blogger!
I hate that Michael Arrington and his way of turning good news into a way to trash PPP
More funding is good. Arrington sounds like a jealous schoolgirl.
There always seems to be so much venom spewed about PPP around the blogosphere. Obviously not from you, but certainly from people like this Arrington guy. I wonder if he’s even bothered to try it and see how the whole thing works?
Maybe I need to be a so called “A-lister” to understand the venom. *shrug* All I know is PPP is the best place I’ve found so far for a small time blogger like me to actually make a little extra money with my blog. Stuff like adsense just isn’t an option. You need oodles of traffic for that. Besides I like writing reviews. Perhaps these “A-listers” are just miffed that because of a site like PPP they’re not the only ones making money from blogging anymore.
Wow, well, even though they get a lot of critisism, it seems like they are growing. More opps for us I hope!
