When I found my old diaries, and a bunch of notes and correspondence from high school last year during our move, I was inspired to write a book. Note that I said “inspired to”, because that as far as that project got! As is typical for my mind, I had 100 ideas and no focus, and no time to write a book, so that little project sits on my back burner. I’ve recently been working with an author to promote his book, and again, I’m feeling inspired to someday write that book.
It’s nice to know that when someday comes, there’s a site like Lulu.com that will help me to create and publish my content, should Random House choose to ignore how awesome I am, and how fabulous my book is. I know of another blogger who used Lulu to create a book, and she was able to determine her own price for the book, and she collects 80% of the profits of each book sold. In addition to books, you can publish CD’s, DVD’s, ebooks, yearbooks, and calendars with Lulu – what a great fundraising tool! A frat house could create a college stud of the month calendar and use Lulu to put it together and take care of all the sales. A church could put together a cookbook of their best pot luck recipes.
There’s never an upfront fee with Lulu. You also own the copyright, and you can create as many books as you like, or just a copy for your mom, so she can brag that you’re a published author. Because each item is printed as it’s ordered, you won’t be stuck with extras, and you won’t have to pay for them. The site offers workshops to get you started with your publishing, so you’re not floundering on your own.
If you’re interested in buying work from a Lulu creator, you can do that too – just browse their website. Maybe you’ll find the next best seller!

We love lulu.
A friend of ours self published a bed time story that he tells his kids, as a gift to give away at a birthday party. We did a coloring book as a gift to my inlaws. And I know that someone did a coffee table book of photographs of the kids as a grandparent gift. I love that you can purchase ISBN numbers as well.
I keep hearing good things about Lulu… thanks for blogging about them
Like Ruby who commented above me, I keep hearing a lot about LuLu, never really knew what it was, thanks for the overview!
