Jim and I will be off to Orlando on Friday to celebrate our anniversary, so this is my pre-anniversary post about that. Some of you know how we met, and some of you don’t, and I think the ones who don’t out number the ones who do. Those of you who have heard this before, grin and bear it!
It was the fall of 1993. I was fresh out of high school and attending my first year of college, and in need of a part time job to pay for my car and my tuition. A friend in my Composition 1 (thank you, Courtney Bauman, wherever you are today!) recommended the grocery store she worked at, and I was hired and started work. Now, my husband claims that he met me in that first week of my employment, but if we did, I don’t remember it. (You know how it is when you start a new job – you meet a TON of people) He claims we did though, and he said he thought I was a little freaky (in a good way) because of my dyed black hair and the Doc Martens I wore with my uniform.
Here’s the way I remember meeting though. You see, Jim had carpal tunnel in his wrists, and he worked as a stock clerk…due to his upcoming surgery, he had to stop stocking and spend some time doing more managerial work, so one night, he was up front in charge of us cashiers. I noticed him right away and started teasing him. He had braces on his arms, so I called him Michael Jackson for the remainder of the night. (Remember how Michael Jackson wore those weird white braces on his arms in a few videos?) I though Jim was much older than my 17 years so I was being a little flirty…well, because I was a bad girl like that. LOL!
A few weeks later, before Christmas of 1993, I was in the store shopping and ran into Jim. We chatted for a bit and I mentioned I was shopping for Christmas Eve dinner, and that we always went to Mass first, and we found out that we went to the same church! I asked HIM out on a date, and took him out to lunch. I was kind of shocked when he didn’t try to kiss me, so the next time we talked on the phone, I gave him hell for that. Nicely, of course. So when he took ME out for lunch the next time, he did try to kiss me. The only problem? I had scratched my eye taking out my contacts and was in agony…so we kissed and I ditched him due to the pain.
Eventually we got on the same page and began dating. The picture above is from the spring or summer of 1994, when we were on our way to a wedding. We dated on and off for a while and broke up after a year together…and got back together a few months later (Spring 1995). We got married in April of 1996, and the rest is history. Here are a few pictures from the wedding:
