Children are little mimics. Anyone who has ever muttered a bad word, only to have their 2 year old repeat it later to Grandma knows what I’m talking about. We’re our children’s first teachers. They look to us as guides for how to act, behave, talk, walk, dress, and live – whether we’re aware of it or not. This child development video illustrates that beautifully. If you speak negatively of people because of their gender, or the color of their skin, your kids will pick up on that. Am I the best role model ever? Certainly not, but I make it a point to NEVER speak poorly about someone in front of my kids because of their gender, religion, skin color, or anything else like that. If I call someone an idiot – it’s because of their actions, and not WHO they are on the outside. And I don’t believe in the whole “Do as I say, not as I do” double standard. My father tried that line on me and it sucks. It’s not fair. I don’t ever ask my kids to do anything that I wouldn’t do. I don’t make excuses for myself because I’m an adult, and they are not. I can’t stand it when parents try to rationalize their bad behavior with that kind of logic. “I’m an adult, so I can do that”. That’s true…but when you have a kid, you’re only showing them that the rules don’t apply to you.
