I bought tickets a few weeks ago to take my girls to their first concert. We’ll be seeing Gwen Stefani in Tampa this May. It got me thinking about MY first concert…I saw the Monkees in one of their 80’s reunion tours. They had made a comeback on Nickelodeon and had a whole new fan following - namely, preteen girls like myself who had never heard of them. I bought their tapes at the store and tuned in religiously to watch the show. It never occurred to be that they were MUCH older than what Iw as used to seeing on TV.
My mom surprised me with the tickets, and off we went. The opening act was Weird Al. I remember enjoying him a lot because he used costumes and sets - he’s actually extremely talented. Finally, it was time for the Monkees. I couldn’t wait to see Davy Jones…he was my favorite! The girls all around us were screaming - the whole audience was mothers and daughters, as far as the eye could see.
And they came out. Not the boys I was used to seeing on TV every night, but men. Men with receding hairlines and wrinkles and sun damage and pot bellies. Where were the Monkees? What do you mean, “this is them”? After I got over my initial disappointment, I got into the show and enjoyed it a lot. They sounded great, they did all of my favorite songs, and I sang along all night.
The evening did end my crush on Davy Jones for good though. Knowing he was as old as my father wasn’t working for me.
About a year ago I started using Verizon’s ringbacktones. Hey Hey We’re the Monkees is the song when you call me. Most people leave me alone about that one though, previously I had Monday, Monday on there and you would be surprised how many people told me they hated it. I guess it just doesn’t fit in with their view of me.
Weird Al opened for The Monkees? LOL That’s a great story! I think that’d been the end of my crush too. I’ve always liked older men, but as old enough to be my father is a no.
I had the biggest crush on Mickey Dolenz, the drummer for The Monkees, when I was in like Junior High. Thanks for this great post.
I am jealous! I used to love the Monkees and had a crush on Davy Jones as well!
The Monkees?
You were never really cool, were you Colleen? ![]()
Hahahaha I love it.
My friends and I went through a Pink Floyd phase - my Mom made fun of us every chance she could. She always said we acted like we discovered them.
I saw The Monkees during that tour, too. I loved Mickey, though. They were here at Red Rocks Amphitheater. Weird Al didn’t open, but I have seen him. He’s going on tour soon for his new album.
I absoluately LOVED the Monkees in the 70s. I was typical and had a big crush on Jones. He was just so cute with those kissable lips and pinchable cheeks
I was too young to know what that meant, but I do now! ![]()
Hahahah! I loved the Monkees too but Peter was my fave.
It’s so disappointing when you find out what they really look like though huh?
Davy Jones aged well though. Just got back from his website. Not bad at all ![]()
the Monkees! My younger sister loved that band! When she decided to rock and roll, we burned the Monkees’ 45-rpm records. In solidarity, I burned the Beach Boys. Wish I had those records now, they would be worth a mint!
Hahhaha, we shall now see your girls’ reaction when they “meet” Gwen Stefani.. Or have they seen her already? ![]()
Was the concert as good as the TV show? My sister was a huge Monkees fan and we had to watch it all the time.
The Monkees! I remember seeing them on the Brady Bunch when I was a kid.
I bet Gwen Stefani will be great in concert. I totally heart her, but I think Wind It Up is the worst song she has ever done.
I was secretely in love with the Monkees in their first incarnation. Secretly because my generation considered them Beatles wannabees, of course. But, dog gone it, they were cute back then. Much too old by the time they did reunions, lol!
I couldnt’ get to the carnival this time, but I’m enjoying visiting those who did. Nic epost!
I had a crush on Davey Jones! We used to watch this when we were younger too!
I remember the Monkey’s comeback oh so well. Funny show ~lol~ and I remember seeing them “in person” on an interview or something for the first time and thinking “what the hell? they’re super old”
