For the past few months, we’ve been getting renewal policies for the homeowners insurance on our old house, the one we sold almost a year ago. We laughed at how expensive the insurance was now (it’s more than doubled, and it’s more than our brand new house!) and patted ourselves on the back for selling at the right time.
Today I got another one in the mail, so I decided to call the insurance company this time, to let them know we no longer lived there and they were sending these out in error. Imagine my surprise when she told me the policy was never cancelled! I thought that by paying off the loan, the mortgage company would have let the insurance company know that their services were no longer needed. Nope. The insurance is paid a year in advance, so they don’t really communicate with the mortgage company much.
The lady I spoke with is mailing us some paperwork to fill out and mail back, along with a copy of our settlement sheet. The good news is we don’t have to pay for insurance we didn’t use, and we’re even going to get a refund BACK, due to the insurance being paid in advance. Yay for being idiots who don’t cancel their homeowners insurance! I was able to locate a copy of our settlement statement, and I’m all ready to get a nice fat refund from Citizens.
